Allergies and Dietary Restrictions

Are Silk products dairy-free?

All Silk products—including our soymilk, Silk Fruit&Protein, Silk Pure Almond® almondmilk, Silk Pure Coconut® coconutmilk, Silk Creamer and Silk Live!®soy yogurt—are dairy-free and can be suitable for people with dairy allergies.

We have extensive testing protocols in place at our production facilities to detect and prevent contamination by dairy or dairy components. Anyone with severe allergies should always consult a doctor before introducing a new food.

Can I use Silk products if I am allergic to dairy?

A dairy allergy is an extreme sensitivity to the proteins in dairy products and should not be confused with lactose intolerance. Dairy allergies can range from mild indigestion to anaphylaxis, which is an acute reaction. Lactose intolerance is difficulty digesting the naturally occurring sugar in milk, which can cause stomach discomfort.

We have extensive testing protocols in place at our production facilities to detect and prevent contamination by dairy components. Anyone with severe allergies should always consult a doctor before introducing a new food.

Can I use Silk products if I am lactose intolerant?

Absolutely. All Silk products are naturally lactose-free.

Are Silk products okay for people with wheat and gluten allergies?

We do not make our products using any wheat, wheat gluten, rye, oat, barley or malt ingredients so we would not expect the presence of them in our products. However, at this time we do not conduct the tests that would allow us to label our products as gluten-free. Anyone with severe allergies should always consult a doctor before introducing a new food.

Are Silk products vegan?

Yes, completely! There are no animal derivatives in our products. The lactic acid and live cultures we use in Silk Live! soy yogurt come from a vegetable source. All vitamins used to fortify Silk products are vegetable-derived. We use calcium from natural limestone. Unlike many DHA-fortified products that contain fish oil, our DHA-fortified soymilk uses algal oil: a sustainable, vegetarian source of DHA.

Are Silk products kosher?

All Silk products in all flavors are certified Kosher OU-D. This means that our products may have been processed on equipment also used for dairy but it does not indicate the presence of dairy in the products. We have extensive testing protocols in place at our facilities to detect and prevent contamination by dairy components.

Does Silk soymilk or Silk Fruit&Protein contain almond and/or coconut?

No, Silk soy products and Silk Fruit&Protein do not contain nut ingredients, including almond and coconut. However, because these products may be manufactured on equipment that also handles foods containing nut ingredients, we put a cautionary statement on our labels.

To help ensure against the risk of unintentional contamination, allergen clean-up procedures are standard in all of our facilities. Anyone with severe allergies should always consult a doctor before introducing a new food.

Storage and Freshness

How long will Silk products stay fresh?

Unopened Silk soymilk and Silk Fruit&Protein will keep fresh in your refrigerator until the date stamped on the top of the carton. Once opened, Silk will stay fresh for seven to ten days if kept refrigerated. It is not unusual for Silk to remain good past the ten-day mark; however, we only guarantee that it will be good for seven to ten days.

Silk shelf-stable soymilk does not need to be refrigerated until it has been opened. It will stay fresh unopened until the date stamped on the carton, usually up to eight months from the date of purchase. Once opened, Silk shelf-stable soymilk ages just like our regular soymilk and must be refrigerated to stay fresh for seven to ten days.

What does shelf-stable mean and how is it different?

Shelf-stable containers are sterile and hermetically sealed, much like canned foods. This allows them to be kept in storage without refrigeration. They are great for stocking your pantry or taking on a trip. Once opened, shelf-stable products should be kept refrigerated.

Can I freeze Silk products?

We do not recommend it. Although freezing does not affect their safety or nutritional value, Silk products change in texture when thawed.

Silk soymilk performs well in frozen-dessert recipes such as soy ice cream or Silk Granita.

Are Silk products pasteurized?

Yes. We use Ultra-High Temperature (UHT) pasteurization to ensure that our products are free of harmful microorganisms.

Nutrition

Do Silk products contain caffeine?

Silk Chocolate is the only Silk flavor with caffeine—3.6 mg per 8-oz. serving. As a comparison, 1 cup of regular coffee contains 115 to 175 mg of caffeine and 1 cup of decaf coffee contains up to 25 mg.

What types of sweeteners do you use?

We use all natural evaporated cane juice in many of our products. It requires less processing than refined sugar. Cane juice is produced by pressing the juice out of sugar cane stalks. The juice is evaporated to form sugar crystals. These crystals are then milled once to give them a more even texture.

All flavors of our Silk Light soymilk contain natural Stevia leaf sweetener as well as natural evaporated cane juice.

Silk Organic Unsweetened soymilk contains no sweeteners.

Do Silk products have omega-3 fatty acids?

Soybeans provide naturally occurring omega-3 ALA essential fatty acids. Because they are made with whole soybeans, all Silk products contain omega-3s. Silk Omega-3 DHA & Calcium also contains added omega-3 DHA from a vegetarian, sustainable source.

Does Silk contain calcium?

Yes. Silk soymilk is an excellent source of calcium, offering at least 30% of the daily recommendation per 8-ounce serving, the same amount as dairy milk.1 Our refrigerated soymilks (excluding organic soymilk and soymilk with DHA) have 45% of the recommended daily value of calcium, which is 50% more than a glass of dairy milk. Silk Fruit&Protein offers 20% of the recommended daily value of calcium, more than unfortified orange juice, making it an excellent source of calcium as well.

How much vitamin D is in Silk?

Silk products are an excellent source of vitamin D, providing at least 25 percent of the recommended daily value; some provide 30%. Check the nutrition label of your preferred variety and flavor.

Can Silk products be used as infant formula?

Ingredient Sourcing

Where does Silk get its soybeans?

Silk products contain only soybeans grown without genetic engineering, right here in North America. We employ robust testing protocols to ensure that our beans meet the highest standards of quality, consistency and safety. In fact, our rigorous standards exceed regulatory requirements.

The organic soybeans purchased by Silk are certified organic by independent agencies accredited by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), in compliance with the organic standards set by the National Organic Program (NOP).

Do Silk products contain genetically engineered (GMO) soybeans?

No. And to be absolutely sure, we’re proud to participate in the Non-GMO Project, a nonprofit, multi-stakeholder collaboration committed to preserving and building sources of non-GMO products, educating consumers and providing verified non-GMO choices.

What are GMOs?

Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) have been created using the gene-splicing techniques of biotechnology (also called genetic engineering, or GE). This relatively new science allows DNA from one species to be injected into another species in a laboratory, creating combinations that do not occur in nature or through traditional crossbreeding methods.

Is Silk natural or organic?

Both! We offer varieties of Silk soymilk in both organic and natural options. Our organic soymilk comes in Original and Unsweetened refrigerated half gallons. We also offer our full refrigerated line of natural soymilk made with non-GMO soybeans. Silk Live! soy yogurt and creamers are made with organic soybeans. Silk Fruit&Protein is an all-natural fruit blend with 5 grams of soy protein. Silk products contain no artificial colors, flavors, preservatives or ingredients.

Why is Silk Organic soymilk more expensive?
